This Tesla Model Y Juniper driver was left baffled when a cop pulled him over for his tail light design.

Usually, when the police pull a driver, it’d be for a speeding offence or for running a red light.

But in the case of one man called Steven, he got pulled over for the design of his car.

Given that he had driven 1,100 miles in this Tesla Model Y Juniper, it’s remarkable that this is the first time he’s had this problem.

Why cops pulled over this Tesla Model Y Juniper?

Steven had been driving when he was pulled over by a cop.

He was left perplexed by the reason given for the intervention and took to a Facebook group for Tesla owners to share his experience.

“Just got pulled over for my tail lights not being ‘on’, I told the officer it’s brand new,” Steven wrote.

“It has 1,100 miles. I told him the red light bar is the tail light.

“The brake lights, both turn signals and red bar was on/worked.

“He told me the where the brake lights are it should be illuminated there also.

“He gave me a warning and told me to get it fixed. Had anyone else had this kind of issue?”

The Model Y Juniper’s tail light faces downwards, hence the confusion on the cop’s behalf.

A writer over at Tesla Oracle reported that other Model Y Juniper owners had written of similar experiences across various community forums.

On most cars, the rear LED light strip would be placed between two main lights.

In the case of the Model Y Juniper, it dissolves into the brake lights.

Despite the confusion, the car does have separate brake lights and turn indicators at each corner of the trunk.

Usually police are well within their rights to pull people over.

But we have to admit, there have been a few cases that do fall outside the boundaries of your average police-civilian interactions.

Remember the time Supercar Blondie herself got stopped by the police in Germany?

And then there was the story of the Italian cops who pulled over a Ferrari driver – just to compliment his ride.

Is this taillight design legal?

Last year, Tesla’s Chief Designer, Franz von Holzhausen and Lead Engineer, Lars Moravy appeared on Jay Leno’s Garage.

While on the show, they discussed the legality of the design, and whether it’s in line with government regulations.

“The regulation is how much lumens come off the surface, but it never defines what kind of surface that has to be,” Moravy said.

“The amount of light you see, actually meets the requirement.”
