In a desperate attempt to get people to buy electric cars, the UK government is offering thousands of pounds in financial incentives through a new EV grant.

Tesla and other EV brands have soared throughout the United States. But the UK hasn’t been as active in transitioning towards a greener carbon wheelprint.

Most of the problem lies with the infrastructure and high electricity bills. There, EVs aren’t seen as much of a money saver, and often mean long waits at very limited charging facilities.

But the UK government is hoping to overturn this stigma and provide more financial incentives to go electric. Starting with discounts of up to £3,500 ($4,700) on new vehicles.

UK government imposes massive financial incentives on EVs

EVs have become more popular in the UK over the last year, with BYD’s affordable range leading the charge.

But the sales need to match. And while there are targets to have all gas cars out of production by 2030 and have nearly all-electric roads by 2035, the UK government still needs to incentivize drivers to switch soon.

Now, a new EV grant has been rolled out to give discounts between £1,500 and £3,750 ($2,008 and $5,020) on new EVs of up to £37,000 ($49,532) in value.

The scheme will be rolled out to specific manufacturers who apply for the grant. A specific list of models is set to follow in the coming days.

It’s all part of a £650m EV project that will last for three years.

But it wouldn’t be the first time that like-minded incentives have been rolled out in the UK. Specific manufacturers have also tried to make Brits switch to electric.

Previously, Ford offered a scheme where each new EV came with a free home charger and installation kit in a bid to overcome charging anxiety.

UK is eyeing up a greener future, but not without hesitation

It’s no lie that the UK has been hesitant when it comes to allowing EVs to flourish.

Tesla specifically has faced a lot of hardship with the Cybertruck. And now the driverless vehicle wave is being held up by legislation.

But, the infrastructure is set to be improved with a massive bill to place solar panels on car parks to make for more accessible charging ports and cheaper prices.

It’s clear to see that the UK government is really pushing to make electric vehicles more accessible with this new EV grant. And, hopefully, the financial incentives will make the cars easier to afford.
