Volvo is crushing the competition as it quietly delivered its 5,000th electric semi truck, racing ahead of the Tesla Semi, which has delivered only around 140.

The company delivered its first EV semi truck in 2019, a few years ahead of Tesla, which made first deliveries in 2022.

It has since sold its EV trucks in 50 countries around the world.

In April, the marque hit a major milestone after delivering its 5,000th electric semi truck.

Volvo electric semi truck is crushing the competition

As we see more and more electric vehicles come to the market, it’s little surprise that electric semi trucks are helping to change the world of transportation.

Manufacturers of EV semi trucks say they will save companies money over time due to lower fuel and maintenance costs.

Volvo began rolling out its electric semi trucks in 2019, and six years on, the worldwide fleet of 5,000 EVs have clocked up more than 100 million miles (170 million km) in 50 different countries.

Impressive stuff.

“It’s rewarding to see that transport companies continue to embrace the benefits with electric trucks in a wide range of transport segments,” President Volvo Trucks, Roger Alm said

“Volvo’s battery-electric trucks are available here and now, providing our customers and transport buyers with a more sustainable alternative that makes business sense, and many of our customers are coming back to us to grow their electric fleets.”

The company currently has eight electric models on offer, including the Volvo FH Electric, which won International Truck of the Year 2024.

Although sold to 50 different countries, Volvo says its biggest markets are Germany, the Netherlands, the US, Norway, and Sweden.

What’s happened to the Tesla Semi truck?

Volvo hitting such an impressive milestone, drags the Tesla Semi into perspective.

The truck was unveiled as a concept in 2017, with production initially planned for 2019.

But production was hit by delays.

So much so that these guys decided to build their own EV semi truck after becoming bored of waiting for the Tesla Semi.

The Tesla Semi finally went into production in 2022, with first deliveries later that same year.

Unlike Volvo, rollout for the Semi has been much slower and only around 140 Tesla Semi trucks are currently in use.

However, Tesla has said mass production of the truck will begin at one of its Gigafactories next year, after which the marque will build 50,000 Semi trucks a year.

So watch this space.
