An American YouTuber has explained why some Americans put European license plates on their cars after his comments section was full of confusion on the matter.
YouTuber EatSleepDrive received many questions about a video about his BMW, with 39 other users wondering why his car has German plates despite being located in the USA.
Some even called the YouTuber a ‘poser,’ which he didn’t understand, but his video cleared up the confusion.
European plates on cars in America are a trend, meaning EatSleepDrive – real name Kurt Hilfer – isn’t alone in doing this.

Americans are obsessed with other people’s culture
The YouTuber believes that some of this is due to Americans being obsessed with the cultures of other countries.
He references the JDM culture and cites a few examples.
Owners of JDM cars sometimes hang little dolls from the tow hooks. Or they add diamond-shaped stickers for ‘novice’ drivers to the windshield.
These are JDM trends that people in America like to follow with their cars.
He also said some owners: “Stick it to the man.”
By that, he meant that some people hate how US plates look on the front of the car and would rather have a European plate installed instead.
You can also get custom European-style plates that come with the correct characters to perfectly replicate their US style plate.
Replicating license plates is not unique to the USA
EatSleepDrive also discusses how this is not just a unique practice in the USA.
Some places in Japan will replicate US-style license plates to replicate the look in America.
Much of it is down to simply being different from everyone else and standing out from the crowd.
There is no right or wrong; a lot of it depends on what the car’s owner likes.

Some may look at a German car like the BMW 3 Series and think it deserves a license plate in the style of its home country.
It, therefore, makes sense that many Americans would prefer to change it rather than have the square US-style plate on their cars.
So, if you do see a European car driving down the street with a different license plate style, chances are they want to be different from you.
