The World’s first production solid-state battery has been built specifically for EVs, and it can fully recharge an electric car in just a few minutes.
EV manufacturers and battery companies are constantly looking at ways in which electric cars can be made more efficient, have longer range, and recharge quicker.
One area that has been looked at is the development of solid-state batteries, and one was recently revealed by Donut Lab.
Designed specifically for electric vehicles, it can slash recharge times massively and offer a serious alternative to lithium-ion batteries.

What we know about the first production solid-state battery
Donut Lab took the covers off its new EV battery at CES 2026.
The company claimed that this battery offers twice the energy density of anything Tesla offers.
It also comes with a longer lifespan and operates better in the most extreme of temperatures, hot or cold.
But the biggest news was just how fast the battery could be recharged.
According to the company, this new solid-state cell can recharge a vehicle fully in just five minutes.
That is game-changing and a very big deal.

Many potential owners of EVs are still put off by the length of time it takes to recharge an electric car.
But with a five-minute charge time, that could change the game.
Recharging any EV would take no more time than refuelling a regular car at a gas station.
Aiming to make combustion engines irrelevant
Donut has stated its ultimate goal is to make combustion irrelevant.
Donut Lab CEO said at CES 2026 that the goal is ‘to make electric vehicles so good that combustion becomes irrelevant’.
The new battery is safer, cheaper to make, lighter, and much more energy-dense.
Tests revealed it can retain more than 99 percent of its capacity at extreme temperatures of -22 Fahrenheit and 212 Fahrenheit.

If damaged, Donut Lab also says that the battery won’t ignite as lithium-ion cells can.
The first production vehicle expected to use the battery is to come from Verge Motorcycles.
It will produce an updated version of its TS Pro two-wheeler, set to arrive with customers in Q1 of 2026.
