A classic 1979 New York City taxi has recently resurfaced in Iowa, and now it’s looking for a new home and a bit of TLC.

There are few vehicles as instantly recognizable as a New York City taxi

The iconic cabs are a traditional symbol of the city.

And if you’ve always fancied getting behind the wheel of one, then now is your chance, because a 1979 model has just gone up for sale – and it comes with a low price tag.

The 1979 New York City taxi is on the hunt for a new home

Facebook Marketplace can be a treasure trove for unusual and one-off vehicles, like this Glide-A-Ride people transporter from the 1960s.

And who can forget this Chevy-inspired road-legal golf cart?

In Iowa, one seller has recently listed a barn find 1979 Checker Motors Co A11 yellow cab.

The seller notes that it’s one of the few real-deal original examples out there.

In the listing, he revealed he had hoped to rebuild and restore it himself, but ‘life is getting in the way’.

So, he’s hoping the New York yellow taxi will make an interesting and worthwhile project for the right person.

Although the cab has some significant damage to its body, the seller says he has all the ‘major pieces’ to make it whole again.

Under the hood, there’s a small block Chevrolet engine paired with an automatic transmission, but the seller warns that its ‘condition is unknown’.

Nonetheless, the 1979 New York City taxi presents a chance to own a true automotive icon.

And with an asking price of $3,500, surely it’s only a matter of time before someone snaps it up and the legendary vehicle gets the restoration it deserves.

Ever wondered why New York City has yellow taxis?

It’s hard to picture a bustling New York City street without its famous yellow taxis.

The history of the cabs dates back decades, to 1907, when Harry N. Allen was left furious after being charged $5 to go less than a mile in a horse-drawn carriage and decided to set up his own taxi company.

Later that same year, he imported 65 cars from France and launched the New York Taxicab Company.

Originally, the cars were green and red, but Allen wanted to make them as eye-catching as possible, so he repainted them yellow, and the rest is history.
