When this American man bought an abandoned jet from Facebook Marketplace, his worst fears quickly became a reality.
The jet itself only cost him a five figure sum, which is a pretty decent deal for a plane.
But the repair bill was looking more like it’d be a seven figure sum.
He had some tough decisions to make – would he be experiencing buyers remorse soon?
Buying an abandoned jet from Facebook Marketplace comes with its challenges
YouTuber Cleetus McFarland is more acquainted with cars.
But this time around, it was a plane that was the focus of his attention.
The plane in question was a Falcon 20, going for $15,000 on Facebook Marketplace.

For a plane, this was an absolute steal.
But you know that saying ‘If something is too good to be true, it probably is’?
Yeah, that would apply to this plane.
There was a whole laundry list of problems attached to this jet, ranging from the tires to the interior to the engines.
This was a tough pill for McFarland to swallow, particularly when it realized the repair bill would be in the seven figures.
Ouch.
“$2.5 million? Wait, what? … No, no, no, no. That’s what it’ll take to get it back in the air?” he exclaimed in disbelief.

“What, the thing has not flown since 2008? We’re going with 2.5? I thought you were going to say like $75,000!”
What happened to this abandoned jet ultimately?
McFarland put several options towards his followers on what to do next.
One option was to invest millions into making it fly.
Option B was to disassemble the plane and make it a permanent display piece at his racetrack.
While it was there, he’d have pieces of it available to buy for $20,000.

To nobody’s surprise, he was leaning towards the second option.
Ultimately, he ended up selling it back to the original owner.
While that’s a bit anti-climactic for the rest of us, it made financial sense for McFarland.
Planes can prove to be quite costly investments
You don’t need us to tell you this, but planes can cost you a whole lot of dough.
Plenty of YouTubers have found this out for themselves, when they’ve taken on abandoned planes as projects.
One YouTuber picked up a jet that used to belong to Elvis Presley.
Much like with McFarland, he got it for a bargain.

He managed to start the engine for the first time in decades, but everything went wrong after.
And much like McFarland, he found the repair bill was going to amount to millions.
That prompted him to opt to convert it into a luxury RV.
But plenty of abandoned planes have happy endings, as YouTuber Jimmys World has proven.
