The couple who fixed up an abandoned superyacht and turned it into their permanent home have given a full tour.

Blaine and Janis had been working on their 50-year-old superyacht for six years.

Originally purchased for $143,000, the original plan had been to work on it for a matter of months.

It didn’t pan out that way, and after years of constant repairs, it’s still a work in progress.

How did this abandoned superyacht look after six years of work?

Blaine and Janis, originally from Anyox, Canada, had purchased the boat, anticipating it would take a few months of work.

But as they admitted on their YouTube channel, Onboard Tangaroa – The Never-Ending Sea Trial, the project needed a lot more work than they originally predicted.

Each penny they earn is spent maintaining and improving the yacht that’s now their permanent home.

But now, it’s time for them to invite people inside the boat to get a closer look.

Even six years on, this 1969 aluminum yacht is still being framed as an ongoing project, with a major update due to start this year.

But a lot had been achieved already.

In the engine room, a marinized Cummins 6.7s had replaced the original Detroit Diesel 12V71s.

Upstairs, the forward deck has been repurposed for storage and to house their teenage daughter.

The captain’s cabin had been converted to house tool parts.

“Funny enough, even with all of that, there’s still not enough room for the stuff we have aboard,” Blaine admitted.

“So it kinda gets spread everywhere.”

The rebuilt pilothouse had dual navigation screens out for chart, radar, and sonar, with paper charts on hand as backups.

In the galley and salon, they showed off the recently installed acacia countertops and the slide-out pantry.

While there was still work left to be done, they’d come a long way and achieved a tremendous amount.

Living out at sea – not always easy, but certainly an experience

It’s certainly been a labor of love, but all big restoration projects are like that.

This US YouTuber learnt that out for himself when he bought a lobster boat.

But even living out at sea comes with its own set of challenges.

One family has lived on a sailboat for 10 years and found that the unorthodox lifestyle had its limitations, but was ultimately rewarding.
