Not a tower in sight or a terminal in view, just balls of sun and a cloud of snow, that’s what you get when you land an Airbus A340 cargo plane on the Antarctica runway.

Exploration of the South Pole has mostly been done via ships and sled dogs, but in the 21st century, we’re getting more and more gigantic planes landing on the icy strip.

It’s not accessible to any old plane, and needs very skilled pilots to handle to slippy runway, but Airbus carriers are now a common sight through the interrupted blue skies of Antarctica.

But, it still looks incredible to watch, as an Airbus A340 has proven in the video above, as its touchdown is greeted with a chorus of claps – not from holiday passengers, but by the crowd of snow crashing together in celebration.
