A video of the Airbus Beluga ‘whale plane’ taking to the skies left people confused as to what it was.

When we say a ‘whale plane’, we mean that quite literally – this thing had eyes and a mouth painted onto it.

When the plane took its maiden flight from Toulouse-Blagnac Airport in France, it certainly had a lot of people looking its way.

It’s a strange idea, but the internet certainly appreciated it.

It’s a bird… it’s a plane… oh wait, it’s a whale?

The BelugaXL was built by Airbus to replace the original Airbus BelguaST plane.

Its first flight took place on July 19 2018, and it entered service on January 9 2020.

Compared to the original Beluga, the XL is 23ft longer and 5 ft 7 inch wider, and can lift 6 ton heavier payload.

But let’s be honest, the real draw of this plane is its adorable design.

It’s not the first time an aircraft has gone an unorthodox route when it comes to its look.

There was this electric plane which looks like a helicopter hybrid, and even Drake’s jet had a not-so subtle message written on it.

Admittedly, it’s not quite on the level as turning your plane into a cartoon whale, but still.

How the internet reacted to the Airbus Beluga

The video of its maiden flight has amassed more than five million views on YouTube, and people have a lot to say about it.

One person commented: “1919: In 100 years there will be flying cars!

“2019: Flying Beluga.”

In fairness, we’re making some good progress on flying cars, as demonstrated by ongoing developments at Orlando Airport.

Another fan said: “The plane was a job whale done.”

“Whoever decided to paint eyes onto this aircraft deserves a pay rise,” another wrote.

For one person, the plane brought out some mixed emotions: “This is the ugliest, cutest thing I’ve seen today.”

We can’t say that we’d take that as a compliment, but maybe the Beluga will just have to settle for that.

Some commenters even made suggestions of what could come next, with Airbus Octopus being thrown out as an idea.

The logistics of fitting eight tentacles onto an aircraft goes way beyond our comprehension.

But maybe the engineers at Airbus can figure something out?

We may soon have a whole sky full of flying sea-life. Watch this space.
