This airport has no security fencing – meaning you can walk right next to the runway while planes approach.
Domine Eduard Osok Airport in Sorong, Indonesia certainly has a unique approach.
More than 9,000 flights pass through this runway each year, but it remains completely open to the public.
It may raise some eyebrows, but locals have created their own system to stay safe.

At this airport, you can walk next to the runway
Domine Eduard Osok Airport in Sorong, Indonesia comes with a remarkable distinctive feature.
That being a total lack of security next to the runway.
That’s right – no barriers and no fences.
You could walk right up onto the runway when planes come into land.

The question is – why on Earth would you want to?
But plenty of people come out to get a ringside seat when jets touch down.
And with more than 9,000 coming into land each year, there’s ample opportunity for a viewing.
Sure, this hands-off approach is bound to cause a lot of stress for health and safety experts around the world.
But the locals have their own system set up, which primarily consists of whistles and horns to warn when planes are approaching.
Failing that, shouting out is apparently deemed to be sufficient.

Unorthodox airports are all around us
Millions of us pass through airports every year around the world.
Most of them are pretty standard, but some stand out – for better or for worse.
The world’s most dangerous is in Nepal and is a real nailbiter.
Then there’s this one which is so frightening that only 50 pilots are qualified to land at it.
But they’re not all scary – this abandoned airport in London was once the world’s biggest, which is pretty remarkable.
And the ones that are still in use are pretty amazing too, like Chicago O’Hare.
