What started as a race car to beat Ferrari – the Ford GT40 – has evolved into a modern supercar and a collector’s item today.

You couldn’t buy one when it was new unless Ford said so, and you can’t buy one today unless you can find one pre-owned, which is difficult.

And when you do, it’ll be expensive.

The latest auction result confirms it.

Ford created something epic

Most automakers can create a fast vehicle, and most can also create cars that people buy, but it’s difficult to create a car that people actually desire.

The Toyota RAV4 was the best-selling vehicle in America last year, but American drivers probably don’t go to sleep dreaming of owning one.

But they might dream about owning a Ford GT.

The first GT40 was a race car first, road car second.

A few decades later, the GT was reintroduced as a proper supercar, but it also worked as a luxury cruiser.

Then, 10 more years went by and the American automaker unveiled the second-generation GT, which is a supercar, but also a collector’s car.

Today, you need close to seven figures to buy one.

So clearly Ford must’ve done something right.

This Ford GT failed to sell for $755,000

This pristine example (pictured below) with just nine miles on the clock failed to sell at auction despite receiving a bid for $755,000.

The reserve wasn’t met, and so the car didn’t sell.

We’ve no idea what the reserve was.

Who knows, maybe it was just $755,001 and it failed to sell for just a dollar.

But we doubt it.

The only thing we can claim with reasonable certainty is the GT will never be as valuable as the original GT40.

A while back, a rare Le Mans-driven Ford GT40 sold for over $13 million.

According to Classic.com, the average market price for a Ford GT is $689,659.

But some models are listed for as high as $800,000 or even $1 million.

Not bad for a Ford.
