This ultra-rare tiny car was discovered in an Australian garage and went for a record amount at auction.
The Peel P50 microcar is renowned for its small stature, but it’s usually associated with the Isle of Man.
You certainly don’t expect to find one on the other side of the world in a Queensland garage.
And you absolutely don’t think it’d fetch an astonishing amount at auction.

How did this tiny car from an Australian garage end up at auction?
The particular car in question had been owned by its family for 49 years, purchased by a microcar enthusiast in the UK back in 1976.
At the time, it went for $995 (£750).
In 1988, it was shipped over to Queensland, Australia, where it remained stowed away for the next 30-plus years.

Besides a paint job, this car is pretty much as it was back when it was made in 1964.
Less than 50 Peel P50s were ever produced, and only 27 are believed to be roaming the Earth today.
So thanks to its rarity and its place cemented in pop culture by Top Gear, this pint-sized car has something about it.
So that begs the question – how much did it sell for at auction?

A Peel P50 goes up for auction, and the result may surprise you
In the end, the Peel P50 went for $55,986 ($85,000 AUSD).
That might sound like a lot for what is a very small car, but what can we say?
Good things come in small packages, sometimes.
That’s good news for any American admirers of this car, as it is now legal to import into the US!

In fact, the car would usually set you back around $130,000, so the auction price is lower than the average.
That puts it on level with a lot of supercars out there.
But hey, microcars are just as important as the big boys.
In fact, it was a microcar that saved BMW, believe it or not.
