Veterans on a packed flight to Washington DC were stunned when Barack Obama appeared onboard and said something they’ll never forget.
The moment he stepped into the aisle, the entire cabin froze as passengers tried to figure out if their eyes were deceiving them because no one expected a former president to be on their flight.
Within seconds, the shock turned into laughter, tears and wide-eyed disbelief that someone like Barack Obama took time out of his day to speak to them.
By the time Obama started talking, the whole plane was hanging on his every word.

The veterans who were honoured on a packed flight to Washington
Passengers who were part of a special Honour Flight travelling from Wisconsin to Washington DC, a program that brings veterans of World War II, Korea, and Vietnam to the capital free of charge, were treated to a surprise visitor.
The goal of the program was simple: give them the chance to see the memorials built in their honour and show them the respect many never received when they came home.
When the former President boarded at the end of the flight, the reactions were immediate, with some veterans wiping away tears before he even spoke.

After speaking to the cabin over the tannoy, former-President Barack Obama greeted each passenger warmly as they got off the plane, where they were treated to claps and cheers from a large group standing outside.
One veteran said he had never met a former president before and couldn’t believe how personal the moment felt.
Another said the greeting meant everything because when he returned from Vietnam decades ago, there was no applause waiting at the airport, instead of support, he remembered silence.

What Barack Obama said to the veterans
Obama delivered a short but powerful message, telling the group that their courage helped shape the nation and that their service would always be remembered.
“I wanted to stop by just say thank you for your extraordinary service. To you, your family for the sacrifices that all of you made to protect our country is something that will always be honored,” he said.
He even joked about the rare seventy-degree weather waiting for them in Washington DC, which seemed like a gift from the universe to thank the veterans for their service.

The Honour Flight Network has grown over more than twenty years, expanding from a small local effort into a nationwide program.
For many on the flight, Obama’s unexpected appearance became the defining highlight of the trip.
As one veteran put it, the visit reminded him that the country still has room for gratitude, respect, and pride in those who served.
