A once-stunning 2006 Ford GT has been pulled from a garage in Georgia where it’s spent the last decade and a half gathering dust, and the team had to wear HAZMAT suits to rescue it.

It’s sad to see any car forgotten about in a dusty old barn or garage.

But there’s something particularly heartbreaking when the car in question is a rare or exceptional model, like this Porsche 912 that was discovered under a thick layer of grime, or this one-off Ferrari Alloy 365 GTB/4 that turned out to be worth more than $2.5 million.

Back in 2024, the team from the VINwiki YouTube channel unearthed a mold-covered 2006 Ford GT inside a garage in Georgia and it was in such poor condition they had to wear HAZMAT suits to get close to it.

The Ford GT began life as a concept car that was designed to mark the carmaker’s centenary, before going into production in 2004.

In terms of performance, the GT was a beast.

Its powerful supercharged 5.4-liter V8 engine had an output of 550 horsepower and 500-lb-ft of torque.

That power translated to a top speed of 205mph, with a 0-62mph time of just 3.8 seconds.

Ford produced just 4,038 of the first-generation GTs – so it was surprising to see one covered in mold in a garage in Georgia.

The poor old GT had spent up to 15 years in the garage, which represents more than half of its entire life.

Due to its time parked, the car was covered in a thick layer of dust and dirt on the exterior, and the interior had been overtaken by mold.

To even get near the car, the team from VINwiki had to don HAZMAT suits to keep themselves from the mold.

It’s spent years parked, but would the GT still run?

Despite its less-than-fresh appearance, the 2006 Ford GT was actually in pretty good shape.

The GT’s engine turned over no bother, and the car even idled.

Somewhat incredibly, the car’s check engine light didn’t even come on.

The team from VINwiki wasted no time in hauling the GT out of its garage and taking it for a short drive before loading it up onto a trailer.

Now, the 2006 Ford GT is set to get the clean-up and restoration it needs – and we can’t wait to see how it all turns out.
