Bentley Mulliner coachbuilding

We’ve seen a lot of cool Bentley Mulliners over the years.

You may recall that this British actor discovered one in a California junkyard and the Bathurst Bentley Continental GT, of which only two were made.

And Alex Hirschi – AKA Supercar Blondie – got to see one up close that had coffee beans for doors.

Yes, you read that correctly.

Coffee beans were used to build the doors of the Batur; talk about unique, huh?

But how did Mulliner get its start?

That story begins back in the 1500s, just one year after Elizabeth I came to the throne as Queen of England.

However, it wouldn’t be until 1760 that the Mulliner name would come to prominence.

This is when they were commissioned to build and maintain carriages for the Royal Mail.

When the 19th century rolled around, H.J. Mulliner moved the family business to the elite London district of Mayfair.

It was here the company found its footing as the coachmakers of society’s elite.

When cars arrived on the scene, it continued its proud history of coachbuilding and soon formed a partnership with Bentley.

This was first put on display at the 1923 Olympia Show, when it designed a bespoke 3 Litre, two-seater.

In that first decade alone, more than 240 Bentley cars were given the Mulliner touch.

A lot of things have changed since, but the collaboration of these powerhouses remains strong.

Mulliner is still Bentley’s personal commissioning division, offering a wide range of services.

But what is on offer?

Artisans bringing your perfect car to life

On its website, Mulliner says ‘have you ever thought of adding something truly unique to your new Bentley?’

“Could be your name or logo, or even a particular pattern or shape that you love. Mulliner can create a solution with our designers to make your dreams come true,” it says.

“These personal touches can be applied to the fascia under a high gloss lacquer or on the treadplates.

“Maybe as a light illuminated to the ground displaying your design. You can also have the embroidery on the seats designed to work in your chosen car interior.”

There’s a ton of options for customers to work with, whether it be artisan fabrics on the cabin upholstery or body-colored paint on the wheels.

You could have a lot of fun playing around with the options available.

The cost at the end of such a process varies.

But given that the priciest Bentley is the Continental GT Mulliner at $250,000, we reckon it’d cost a pretty penny.
