BMW and range-extending EVs – here’s what we know so far:
BMW is a versatile car manufacturer and offers a range of vehicles with a variety of powertrains, and now another kind could be added to the lineup, too.
Reports have surfaced of rumors of the car brand looking to add the possibility of range‑extending EVs to its fleet.

According to Bloomberg, the brand is said to be ‘continuously analyzing usage patterns, customer needs and market developments and reviewing the market potential of various technologies’.
The publication also reported that the X5 SUV and 7-Series sedan could be turned into range‑extending EVs, thanks to readily available room for engines to be added in, according to other individuals.
But what exactly are range-extending EVs in the first place?
Well, they are a special kind of hybrid that means you can cover further distances with ease.
Range‑extending EVs cleverly run on an electric powertrain but also have an added superpower of an engine for extra oomph.

So, forget the days of worrying about your EV conking out in an inconvenient situation, as you’ll have an extra backup that could kick in on its own accord.
Why this move could be made by the manufacturer
Thanks to the high demand from all avenues in regards to EVs, if BMW were to bring this idea back into fruition, it could feed demand in the US and China.
However, it seems that this tech isn’t actually completely new at all.
And that’s because the company once produced the BMW i3 REX.
The car was able to produce power from electricity, but was also assisted by a small engine powered by gasoline that could recharge the battery.
Other makes and models are also set to be offering clever range-extending EVs too, such as Jeep, Hyundai, and, allegedly, Volkswagen.
So, your days of having range anxiety could soon be behind you.
But remember, this is currently only speculation at this moment in time.
We’ll keep you updated on the exciting news as and when it comes in.
