A certain Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner looked more like a fighter jet than a commercial airliner as it carved through the sky in a jaw-dropping display.

At the UK’s Farnborough Airshow 2014, the massive jet stunned crowds with steep climbs, aggressive banking turns, and a landing so short it barely seemed possible.

It was the kind of performance you’d expect from a nimble military aircraft, not a wide-body passenger plane.

However, Boeing’s cutting-edge jet at the time made it all look surprisingly effortless.

The Boeing 787-9 is still in operation today

The display, originally shared in a YouTube video from 2014, showcased just how capable modern airliners have become.

Viewers watched as the aircraft executed a dramatic takeoff, climbing at an unusually steep angle of almost 30 degrees.

It then rolled into a tight 60-degree banked turn.

The finale was just as impressive, with the jet touching down in a remarkably short distance, highlighting both its precision and control.

To understand why this is even possible, it helps to look at the aircraft itself.

The 787 family, developed by Boeing, marked a major leap forward in commercial aviation when it first entered service in 2011.

Built largely from lightweight composite materials rather than traditional aluminum, the Dreamliner is both stronger and significantly lighter.

The 787-9 variant is a stretched version of the earlier 787-8, offering more passenger capacity and longer range while maintaining impressive efficiency.

Under the hood, the aircraft is powered by advanced engines like the Rolls-Royce Trent 1000 or the General Electric GEnx, both designed for high efficiency and strong thrust.

Combined with its flexible composite wings and sophisticated flight control systems, the Dreamliner is far more agile than older airliners of similar size.

The real Dreamliner magic

But the real magic lies in how it’s flown.

During airshow demonstrations, highly trained test pilots push the aircraft well within its certified limits, but far beyond what you’d see in normal airline service.

Modern fly-by-wire systems, which replace traditional manual controls with computers, help stabilize the aircraft and allow for smoother, more precise handling even during aggressive maneuvers.

These systems ensure that while the plane looks like it’s an oversized fighter jet, it remains fully under control at all times.

It’s also worth noting that these maneuvers are carefully planned and conducted under strict safety conditions.

While the Dreamliner can handle it, airline passengers would never experience anything close to this on a regular flight.

Even though the video is more than a decade old, the demonstration remained a spectacle even by today’s standards.
