This Boeing 787 pilot gave the internet an inside look at what it’s like to be on standby, and it’s probably not what you expect.

Garrett Ray uploaded a video about his life being on short call reserve as a pilot.

This opened itself up to a lot of questions – including what he did with his dog, Bella.

In his video, Ray laid out all the information.

How do you live when you’re on call as a Boeing 787 pilot?

Although he’s ‘on call’, Ray usually has a pretty good idea of the likelihood that he’ll be called out to fly.

By keeping his eye on open trips and staying up to date with other pilots in a group chat, he can live fairly at ease from day-to-day.

It also doesn’t hurt that he’s also paid as a full-time pilot on days when he isn’t called to fly.

This allows him to stay at home, work out, and create content.

But there are still things he has to bear in mind.

For one, he has a dog called Bella who needs care should he be called out for a 787 trip – which can take up to three or four days.

Fortunately, he has a structured plan in place, which involves multiple dog sitters in the local area and a local emergency dog daycare.

He also has to make sure he is ‘mission ready’, which means keeping his iPad charged so he can access flight charts and data.

His bags also need to be packed, and his uniform needs to be ready.

While on call, he tries to stay within 30 minutes of his home and within an hour of JFK Airport.

Currently, he’s only qualified for certain routes – Delhi in India and Haneda in Japan.

But he said that this will expand in the future to encompass locations like London, Madrid, and Rome.

Bearing all of this in mind, does he like this kind of lifestyle?

The life of a pilot

The idea of being on call might sound like some people’s idea of hell.

You may envision somebody sitting anxiously by their phone, tapping their foot, and twiddling their thumbs.

For Ray, this couldn’t be further from his experience.

“I got paid to sit at home and do the things I love, hang out with Bella, play paddle, work out, create content,” he said.

“I get to do all these amazing things, all while getting paid.

“And if I get called for a trip, even better. I get to fly a Boeing 787.”

The only downside? Being away from his beloved pooch.

This is one of the more revealing looks into the life of a Boeing 787 pilot we’ve seen on the internet.

But many pilots have divulged details about their lives flying.

We’ve gotten to see the sleeping areas on Boeing 787 Dreamliners, and one A380 captain even showed people how to fly a plane.
