According to a new study, Boston, Massachusetts, is the most dangerous place to drive in the United States.
The northeastern city is followed closely by Washington, D.C. and Baltimore, Maryland.
The accident-per-mile ratio of Boston is shockingly bad.
And, by contrast, you’ll probably have your biggest ‘you don’t say’ moment this week when you learn about the safest cities to drive.

Why Boston is the most dangerous place to drive in the US
As it turns out, Boston is the most dangerous place to drive in the United States, by a long mile.
According to a new study published by Allstate, an insurance company, Bostonians drive on average just 3.1 years between accidents.
That’s a shockingly high rate.
Some people drive an entire lifetime without any accidents but clearly that’s not the case in Boston, Massachusetts.

Although, to be fair, bad traffic, bad visibility and icy roads in the winter probably contribute to higher accident rates.
The fact that Massachusetts places two more cities in the top five – Worcester and Springfield – is further evidence of that.
If we look at the top 10, which also includes three cities in California, Providence, Rhode Island and Philadelphia, one thing clearly stands out: these are all congested cities where people use their a car a lot.
What about the safest city to drive?
Brownsville, Texas has been ranked as the safest place in the United States for drivers.
The average Brownsville motorist goes 14.24 (!) years without any accidents.
There are a lot of stereotypes about Texas, and when people think of Texas, they think of private jets or SpaceX and so on.
But, stereotypes aside, Texas is a very large state that’s only densely populated if you consider the big cities.
Brownsville is twice as large as Paris, but has a population of just around 190,000.
In fact, the top 10 list of safest places to drive includes a lot of cities most people may have never heard of in states that are either sparsely populated or gigantic, and often both.

For reference, the top 10 includes cities in Idaho, Colorado, North Carolina, Texas, Kansas, Arizona, Florida, Wisconsin and Oregon.
Most of these cities probably won’t ring a bell to people from other states, perhaps with the exception of Scottsdale, Arizona (pictured above), which has a population of 244,000 even though it’s larger than Las Vegas.
So today’s moral of the story is that if you want to reduce your chances of being involved in an accident, you can always move to a smaller town in a sparsely populated state, which brings us back to the ‘you don’t say’ moment we mentioned earlier.
Unless you’re driving on the fourth of July, that is, because that’s just one giant jam everywhere.
