The Buick Electra E7 is Buick’s latest attempt to prove that long-range electrified SUVs don’t have to compromise on style or comfort.
Recently unveiled by SAIC-GM, the five-seat SUV is set to go on sale in China later this year.
It’s built on Buick’s new ‘Xiaoyao’ fusion architecture, and introduces the brand’s latest ‘True Dragon Plug-in Hybrid Pro’ (yes, it’s a mouthful) system.
Most impressively, Buick claims a combined driving range of more than 1,600 km, or just over 1,000 miles.

The Buick Electra E7 leans heavily into futuristic design
Its exterior is inspired by the Electra SUV concept, with sharp, flowing lines and a dramatic split headlight layout.
Buick describes the front as a ‘wind-chasing shark’, and it’s easy to see why.
At the rear, full-width taillights with parametrically arranged light elements give the SUV a high-tech, premium finish.

Riding on 20-inch wheels wrapped in Michelin tyres, the Electra E7 looks every bit like a flagship model.
Dimensionally, the SUV sits firmly in the mid-to-large category, measuring 190 inches long with a 112 inch wheelbase.
That generous footprint translates to a spacious cabin, supported by an intelligent cockpit powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8775P chip.
The Electra E7 will also feature an advanced semi-autonomous driving assistance system, which uses LiDAR to expand the assistant’s range and accuracy.
Buick tailors its EVs specifically for Chinese buyers
Under the bonnet is where things get especially interesting.
The ‘True Dragon Plug-in Hybrid Pro’ system combines a 1.5T hybrid-specific engine, rated at 115 kW and 230 Nm, with a 165 kW electric motor.

A lithium iron phosphate battery enables a CLTC-rated pure electric range of over 130 miles, while the total CLTC range exceeds 1,000 miles.
It also features a pre-emptive continuously variable damping suspension, that scans the road 500 times per second.
This allows the EV to adjust itself in real time, smoothing out bumps before occupants even feel them.

The Buick Electra E7 also reflects the company’s deep roots in China.
The brand has been a major player there for decades, consistently ranking among the most trusted foreign brands, although it still falls short of Tesla’s popularity.

Through its SAIC-GM joint venture, Buick has tailored products specifically for Chinese buyers, focusing on comfort, technology, and electrification.
With its latest offering, Buick is reinforcing its position in one of the world’s most competitive EV markets.
Considering its parent company GM recently overtook Ford to become the number two EV seller in the US, it looks like electrification is paying off for the storied carmaker.
