BYD had the perfect reaction to BYD owner who decided to get rid of his car after it suddenly emergency braked on the highway

When this BYD car suddenly braked on a highway, the company responded in the perfect way.

You might recall the story of Izwan Hassan, who went viral when his  BYD Atto 3 unexpectedly braked on a Malaysian highway back in May.

It wasn’t an ideal situation at all, and it ultimately led to him selling the car.

But despite the negative experience, BYD rose to the occasion and responded in an exemplary way.

How BYD responded when one of its cars braked suddenly on a highway

It all unfolded back in May 2025, as Hassan was driving with his family from Melaka to Penang along the Cheras-Kajang Expressway in Malaysia.

All was going well, until the car came to an abrupt stop in the fast lane.

Given that it’d been travelling at between 90 and 100 kilometers per hour, it’s nothing short of a miracle that nobody was hurt in the incident.

What had caused the EV to grind to a halt so suddenly?

Initially, a faulty 12V battery was suspected to be the culprit, but BYD later found it to be a busted driver-side door sensor.

When the sensors failed, this triggered the car’s safety system, bringing hazard lights came on, and activating the brakes.

The car emergency-braked as a result, coming to a complete stop in under seven seconds.

Fortunately, BYD responded in a way that pleased both parties.

“We appreciate the professional conduct shown by BYD Sime Motors in resolving this matter amicably by repurchasing the vehicle through a full settlement with the bank,” Hassan revealed in a Facebook post.

“Although I did suffer a slight financial loss from the instalments paid, I am not willing to risk a repeat of the incident. My family’s safety is paramount.”

Accidents aside, this manufacturer is going from strength-to-strength

As scary as this situation undoubtedly was, it’s notable in another way.

We very rarely see these kinds of stories about BYD, as the Chinese EV manufacturer consistently seems to riding a wave of good press.

BYD has taken full advantage of the rise in popularity of EVs and rocketed to dazzling success since 2020.

So much so that it usurped Tesla in the UK earlier this month, shortly after dominating the entirety of the European market in a ‘watershed moment’.

Chinese EVs are even making their way into the North American market via Canada – but the US is still standing firm on not allowing them.

“Blocking Chinese EVs may buy time for U.S. automakers, but time only helps if you use it to scale, innovate, and compete,” John Higham, the spokesperson of the EVA, told Supercar Blondie.

“Right now, the bigger risk isn’t foreign competition, it’s uncertainty at home.”
