BYD’s new luxury electric sedan packs 1,287hp and 625 miles of range, coming out just as the company becomes the biggest EV seller in the world.

2025 was quite the year for the Chinese manufacturer, as it knocked Tesla off its pedestal in several markets around the world.

Its winning streak looks set to continue with the upcoming Yangwang U7, offering supercar levels of power in a sedan.

The biggest change to the updated BEV comes with its battery.

Introducing the new and improved Yangwang U7

The original Yangwang U7 has been available since May 2025, with both a electric and plug-in hybrid option available.

Recent filings with China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) have revealed what BYD has in store this year.

The main change comes with the battery, with the U7 now powered by a 150kWh lithium-iron-phosphate Blade battery, with a 135kWh version also available.

On a test cycle, the larger battery had a range of 625 miles, whilst the smaller one had 497 miles.

It’s not the biggest EV battery out there – that distinction belongs to the GMC Hummer with 212kWh.

Even with the bigger battery, the weight difference isn’t that significant – the 150kWh pack is just 44Ibs heavier than the 135kWh version.

BYD’s on the rise around the world

BYD’s success has been widely documented in the past few years, as it’s overtaken Tesla to become the biggest EV seller in the world.

It’s been a big success in the UK , Europe, and South America.

But if you’re expecting BYD to be sold in the US anytime soon, don’t hold your breath.

The brand is effectively blocked from the US market due to tariffs, and getting a Chinese EV into the country involves jumping through a lot of hoops – and spending a ton of cash.

In terms of global sales, BYD beat out Tesla in 2025.

With figures like these, it’s no wonder that BYD’s new factory in China is set to be bigger than the entirety of San Francisco, stretching out at over 50 square miles.

It’ll be a while yet until it’s finished, but imagine how BYD will have grown by then.
