After this man’s BYD Atto 3 randomly hit the emergency brake on the outside lane of a highway, it took company officials to come out to his house in Melaka, Malaysia, to resolve the issue.

Electric cars are so flush with automated systems that a lot of driving can be outside of our control.

But it’s not just self-driving that throws up some quirks, as many cars now have emergency braking systems that take the power out of the battery – and our hands.

Just like on this occasion, as a BYD official had to explain to a driver why its flagship EV slammed on the brakes whilst going 65mph on a highway.

When it comes to autonomy, safety is a high priority, and the tech has proven to save lives in certain scenarios, acting quicker than humans could due to reaction times.

But in the case of Malaysian man Nur Afifah Abdul Rahim, his BYD Atto 3 malfunctioned on the highway due to a suspected 12V battery fault, which left him stranded in the fast lane of the Cheras-Kajang highway.

Claiming a ‘Power System Failure’, the car came to an abrupt halt, and the wheels locked themselves from moving, even after a restart – this meant it couldn’t be pushed to safety either.

“Several cars almost crashed by avoiding hitting our car, which suddenly stopped in the right lane,” the driver said in a post on Facebook.

But diagnosing the car was no easy feat.

The man claimed multiple BYD dealerships refused to provide him a courtesy car while the Atto 3 was looked at in the garage, and he was shocked that a battery could lose so much power without prior warnings in just ten months of driving.

Lo and behold, after weeks of complaining, a BYD representative arrived in his town to discuss the problem.

He revealed that an investigation into his car had taken place, and it found an issue with the sensors in the driver’s door, which resulted in a full shutdown of the system.

Despite being frustrated at the customer service he received before the BYD official stepped up to the plate, he revealed that the company made a great gesture by settling his loan in full.

“We appreciate the professional conduct shown by BYD Sime Motors in resolving this matter amicably by repurchasing the vehicle through a full settlement with the bank,” he added.

Still, the trust had been broken, and he opted to look for a new car instead.

The Chinese manufacturer takes safety seriously

As one uncle of a superhero said, ‘with great power comes great responsibility,’ and as the world’s fastest-selling car manufacturer, BYD has a lot of trust placed in its vehicles.

Usually, the rapidly-growing brand shows exemplary skill in the safety department, with its SUVs doubling as boats to prevent any unfortunate mishaps when water is around.

Even its cheapest models come with some of the most advanced sensors in the world.

The brand has grown significantly over the last year, with more than an 800 percent rise in sales in certain regions, and it’s clear to see that the safety features and affordable quality are revving drivers’ engines.
