This California-based company created the Disappearing Car Door, and even though it was a good idea, it was flawed.
A defunct company called Jatech shared a video of the innovative design back in 2007.
We certainly give them props for creativity.
But it obviously didn’t catch on – and there’s a few reasons why.

In the world of cars, there are a lot of ideas that come along.
Some of them catch on – EVs were once considered a rogue idea at some point, right?
But then there are ideas that don’t quite land.
Does anyone remember this nuclear-powered car that was quite literally a WTF concept?

And that wasn’t even the first time somebody tried fueling a car that way, as the Ford Nucleon got there decades before.
Out-of-the-box thinking has brought us a lot of weird and wonderful cars over the years, like the Toyota Pod and the Nissan Cube.
Joining the club of bizarre car creations is the Disappearing Car Door, from California company Jatech.
This is exactly what it says on the tin, and the company made no bones about that.

While a standard door would open on a hinge and swing outwards, this door went down, allowing for tons of space.
We can certainly see the appeal.
As the company pointed out, there’s minimal risk of dinging the door on another vehicle in a tight parking spot.
Plus, it just looks cool, right?
The video was shared online in 2007, but we could totally see this design being rolled out in 2025.
In the video, people are seen stepping in and out of cars with this feature, looking ultra trendy while doing so.

It is California, after all.
But why hasn’t this caught on?
Well, let us just present one scenario to you.
What would happen if this door malfunctioned?
Would you just be stuck driving around with no car door? Or what if it stopped halfway down?
Maybe the conventional door design is the way to go after all.
Still, we’ll always have the memory of what could have been.
And people on YouTube certainly seem to enjoy it, even after all these years.
“The concept stayed true to its word, and really disappeared!” one viewer commented.
“Having a window stuck down is one thing. Not being able to get your door back up is another thing,” another said.

But who knows what the future holds?
Years ago, Jatech shipped the idea around to a few manufacturers, including Cadillac, but nobody took it on.
Maybe somebody will work out the kinks with this idea, and we’ll see disappearing car doors everywhere in the future.
You know what they say, when God closes a door, another door gets rolled down. Or something.
