Sometimes the least practical ideas make for the best stories.
For a California YouTuber, that idea turned into a full-blown journey across one of America’s most iconic highways in a tiny car.
Along the way, he saw a glimpse into a past that still lingers in quiet corners of the country.
And while his choice of vehicle may have been unconventional, it was exactly why his experience was one-of-a-kind.
Sleeping in the vehicle wasn’t the most comfortable
Cruising through Arizona in a Miata, YouTuber mellow_conner described stretches of Route 66 as feeling like a movie set.
The empty roads and faded signage gave off an almost surreal atmosphere, as if time had simply paused.

The once bustling route used to be filled with travelers, motels, and various roadside attractions.
These days, much of Route 66 has since been overshadowed by faster and more efficient interstates like I-40.
With fewer stops and long stretches of isolation, the YouTuber’s journey inside the iconic sports car began to test him.

After all, living out of a Miata for months came with its challenges.
Despite having experience backpacking and being used to minimalist living, adapting to such a tight space wasn’t always easy.
According to him, the biggest obstacle wasn’t storage or comfort, but finding places to sleep.
Over the course of his trip, he spent at least 12 nights sleeping inside the car.

“It gets more comfortable as time goes on, but I don’t think I will be disappointed to go back to a bed after the trip,” he told Supercar Blondie.
That said, the rewards often outweighed the discomfort.
Free camping spots in the Southwest offered stunning views and a sense of freedom that’s hard to match.

Surrounded by desert landscapes and wide-open skies, he found a kind of peace that made the challenges worthwhile.
It also gave him a deeper appreciation for the slower, more intentional pace of life on the road.
Route 66 is still one of the best road trip destinations in the world
When asked about his favorite part of Route 66, his answer wasn’t a specific landmark or tourist attraction.
“My favorite parts of Route 66 were often the parts untouched by humans,” he said.
“The vast open desert with a few dilapidated structures along side, nature reclaiming what was once a small town.”

He even compared the Arizona section of Route 66 to the setting of the iconic Cars movie, describing it as ‘perfectly scenic’.
Of course, no road trip comes without its share of uncertainty.
Mechanical concerns, rough terrain, and the unpredictability of daily travel often added an extra layer of tension to the journey.
“For me personally, the hardest thing is wondering if the Miata will make it another day or not! It’s a 200,000-mile car after all,” he quipped.

Even so, he wouldn’t hesitate to recommend road trips to others, although he would highly recommend a slightly more practical vehicle.
For him, the challenges are what made the experience thus far meaningful.
And while Route 66 may not be what it once was, it proved that it was still one of the most incredible scenic drives in the world.
