Back in 2020, a once-famous cruise ship reached the end of its journey.

And we’ve found footage capturing the moment the Carnival Fantasy ran aground for the last time.

For cruise fans, it was a strange sight.

Because the ship once carried thousands of vacationers across the Caribbean.

The moment the Carnival Fantasy cruise ship was beached

The footage, shared on YouTube by travel channel Destinations with Sal & Debi Pitera, showed the final chapter of the Carnival Fantasy.

In the video, the massive vessel slowly approached the shoreline in Aliağa, Turkey – one of the world’s best-known ship-breaking sites.

Then the bow slid onto the sand.

This process, known as ‘beaching,’ is how many retired ships arrive at scrapyards before workers dismantle and recycle them.

For a ship that once sailed packed with holidaymakers, it was a surprisingly low-key ending.

Carnival Cruise Line launched the Carnival Fantasy in 1990 as the first ship in its Fantasy class.

The 70,367-ton vessel stretched about 855 feet long and carried roughly 2,675 passengers.

For decades, it sailed Caribbean routes from ports like Florida and New Orleans, becoming one of the more familiar ships in the fleet.

But after 30 years at sea, the company retired the ship in July 2020 during the pandemic and later sold it for scrap.

The ship disappeared, but the memories stayed

As the video circulated online, viewers shared memories from trips they had taken on the ship.

One comment captured why the moment hit so many people.

“My wife and I met on that ship in 1993,” a viewer wrote.

“We took another trip in 2006 with our kids and showed them where we met. The ship may be gone, but our marriage is still going strong.”

The Carnival Fantasy eventually disappeared piece by piece.

But for the thousands of passengers who sailed on it, the memories of those trips didn’t disappear at all.
