This YouTuber decided to put extremely cheap Chinese wheels on his Bugatti Veyron Grand Sport and test if they could survive a top-speed run without getting destroyed.

VinWiki’s Ed Bolian owns a 2012 Bugatti Veyron Grand Sport, and he is certainly not treating it like a museum piece.

After racking up thousands of miles in the Bugatti, he faced one of the most brutal realities of supercar ownership – the cost of new tires, which can set you back $10,000 for each tire.

Instead of forking out for new high-performance tires, he swapped to fake Chinese replicas to see just how much they could handle.

Extremely cheap Chinese wheels on a Bugatti Veyron Grand Sport

VinWiki’s Ed Bolian has a lovely Bugatti Veyron Grand Sport supercar, which originally came with Michelin PAX tires, a system developed specifically for the car when it was the world’s fastest production vehicle.

The issue is that those tires are not only expensive, but they’re also increasingly hard to find.

So Bolian had a company in China manufacture replica forged aluminium wheels.

Before attempting any high-speed runs, he shipped two of the Chinese wheels and two factory Veyron wheels to Unified Global Packaging in Massachusetts for reliability testing.

The team ran a comparison test using a vibration table designed to replicate real-world conditions

Despite increasing the stress levels and trying to find a point where it failed, the replica wheel held its own during testing.

They even followed up by loading both wheels under a 20-ton press, and neither failed.

The Chinese wheels were found to be manufactured to a high standard and free of obvious defects, giving the YouTuber the confidence to take the next step.

Putting the wheels through their paces

With lab testing complete, Bolian drove his Veyron down to Titusville, Florida, for a Supercar Owners Circle runway event, where drivers had access to a 5km runway.

He entered top speed mode using the Veyron’s speed key, but weather conditions did not play nice.

Rain pounded the runway, causing the grip to drop, and the car threw up warnings, including an exhaust gas temperature alert and, later, a misfire code popped up.

Even with the weather causing issues during the test, the YouTuber still managed to hit 200mph, proving his cheap wheels could survive real-world high-speed stress without drama.

He left the event confident that the replica wheels were not just a cost-saving solution, but a workable solution for owners.
