Japanese concept car is basically a house on wheels

A Japanese chemical company has shown off a brand new concept car, and it’s basically a house on wheels. 

The Japanese concept car has no steering wheel or pedals but it does have a small wooden table and ottoman (because what else would you put in a car?) 

It’s called AKXY2, which is not exactly the coolest name we have heard. But it has some cool features.

The body of the car is split down the middle with a canopy-style glass roof on top.

To get in and out, the canopy rises vertically and a door folds down to serve as a step for people to get in and out.

The canopy also opens and closes with a switch because manual doors are SO last year.

Going hard on the sustainability theme, the two seats are covered with Dinamica, which is basically recycled polyester. 

Parts of the car are also made from ocean waste.

And the tires are made from bio-based butadiene to improve fuel and energy efficiency. 

A sensor inside the car also monitors CO2 levels in the cabin to make sure air quality is perfect.

The concept is designed by Asahi Kasei – a sustainability-forward Japanese chemical company.

The concept car – which celebrates 100 years of Asahi Kasei – is designed based on three themes including sustainability, satisfaction and society. 

Sustainability: 

The vision was to create a totally sustainable car. 

“Sustainability including climate change is an urgent issue that the world needs to address with no exception,” the company said. 

“AKXY2 features materials and technologies of Asahi Kasei that can contribute to sustainability now and in the future when demand will continue to increase.” 

Satisfaction: 

People’s satisfaction and comfort was prioritized throughout the design phase.

“Satisfaction is deeply connected with all sense and intuition as well as emotional and physical contentment,” Asahi said. 

Society: 

The textile company wanted this concept to be the connection between cars and society. 

“By providing a private space to enjoy individual activities and a space that fosters not digital but actual experience and communication, AKXY2 proposes richer fulfillment,” the company said.  

The concept car is currently on show at the Automotive Engineering Exposition in Yokohama, Japan.
