Concorde is arguably the most iconic aircraft that has ever been built.
Its renowned for its speed, but did you know that it was able to fly this fast?
The legendary aircraft was so fast that it allowed 100 wealthy Americans to do something amazing.
It outran the Earth itself to allow these passengers to celebrate the same night three times.

Concorde promises group once-in-a-lifetime experience
It is literally impossible to recall the history of aviation without Concorde.
The joint British-French venture changed the very nature of travel itself.
A lot of stories have circulated over the years, like those shared by the staff at Air France.
But this particular story takes us all the way back to 1976.
And you might want to fasten your seatbelts for this one.

Back on New Years’ Eve 1976, 100 wealthy Americans stepped onboard the legendary airplane.
And they had completely changed history by the time they touched the ground again.
The event in question was called ‘Encore III – An Extraordinary Voyage Through Time’.
This spectacular event was sold by a New York outfit called Encore Marketing Company.
The company promised passengers a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity:
And that was the promise to celebrate New Years’ Eve three times in the same night.
It promised to use Concorde to outrun the very rotation of the Earth itself.

Aircraft races time itself across the Earth
The advertised price was $4,850 per person in 1976, which works out to roughly $27,500 today.
But the package was more than worth the money.
Concorde would first fly passengers from the US to Paris, where the group would celebrate New Years’ Eve.
A formal dinner began, with champagne and celebration flowing.
The passengers were then whisked straight to the airport – to an awaiting Concorde.
A second New Years’ Eve was then celebrated in the air across the Atlantic.

While the jet travelled at Mach 2, dinner was served during the chase against darkness itself.
Concorde was fast enough, for long enough, to move backward through local time.
Flying west at roughly 1,330 miles per hour while the Earth rotated eastward beneath it, the aircraft effectively erased time zones faster than the clocks could advance.
After just three-and-a-half hours, Concorde descended towards Washington D.C.
By the time the group landed, it was just turning midnight on New Years’ Eve for the third time.
Limousines carried the group towards the French Embassy.
The French ambassador and his wife hosted the gathering, greeting the group with open arms.
It was this night that Concorde literally became a time machine.
The jet stopped becoming a plane and morphed into a machine that defeated time itself.
