An entry-level Tesla Model 3 EV embarrassed a Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat muscle car in a drag race twice, even with a significant handicap.
The EV went up against the muscle car in a set of drag races. Most people might have expected the Dodge to come out on top, especially as the speed increased.
But the driver of the Dodge got the shock of their life as the Tesla Model 3 was more than capable of holding its own against the American muscle car.
Even though the Tesla had a performance handicap, it was able to take the fight to the Challenger SRT Hellcat more than once.

How did the entry-level Tesla and Dodge drag races unfold?
The Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat muscle car went up against the first and second generations of the Tesla Model 3 Performance.
While the acceleration of EVs is impressive, quite often the internal-combustion-powered car is able to haul it in during a drag race.
This typically happens as the Tesla/electric car reaches its top speed, while the ICE-powered car keeps on getting faster and faster.

But in these races, the Tesla was easily able to outdrag the Dodge and leave it in its wake.
The first-generation Model 3 smashed through the 1/4 mile in 11.76 seconds.
Meanwhile, the newer version did it in just 11.10 seconds.
How the Dodge fared in the drag race
The Dodge, meanwhile, did a 12.16-second pass in the first race.
It then completed the 1/4 mile in 12.28 seconds in the second drag race.
Its lack of success against the Teslas was surprising.
Mostly because it has 250hp more than its electric rival, a major handicap for the Model 3.
The 6.2-liter Hemi V8 engine produces 707hp and 650lb-ft of torque.
But it is not as strong when it comes to putting the power down onto the tarmac without too much wheelspin.
That is where the Tesla can get the jump on the Challenger SRT, and how it was able to sprint away to two easy victories.
The drag races show how impressive EVs can be even if they’re up against cars with a lot more horsepower.
