An American EV driver ‘blew his coworker’s mind’ after comparing the fuel efficiency between his Hyundai Ioniq 5 and his pal’s Golf GTI.
When it comes to switching from an ICE car to an all-electric one, some motorists have concerns about range.
In fact, it’s even been given its own name: range anxiety.
However, one happy EV owner recently proved a point to his ICE-driving coworkers about just how efficient electric cars can actually be.

The Hyundai Ioniq 5 owner crunched the numbers
There are plenty of EV drivers out there who are happy to talk about the benefits of switching, including those who have revealed how much they’ve saved, and others who insist they’ll never go back.
Over on Reddit recently, the owner of a Hyundai Ioniq 5 revealed how his coworker was ‘one of those guys who has all [of] these doubts and concerns about EVs’, but how he left him ‘mind blown’ after comparing efficiency between his all-electric and his coworker’s 2018 GTI.

In the post, he explained that his coworker had been teasing him about his car’s ‘mere’ 280 to 300 mile range.
But rather than rise to the bait, he simply grabbed a bit of paper and crunched the numbers to show just how efficient his car actually was.
He said that his coworker’s Golf GTI has a 13 gallon tank, which – according to the US Department of Energy – equals around 429kWh.
Meanwhile, the Ioniq 5 has a 78kWh battery, which is equivalent to around 2.4 gallons of gas.

Comparing the two, the EV driver said this means he gets around 300 miles on the equivalent of just 2.4 gallons of gas, whereas the GTI can do around 84 miles on the same 2.4 gallons of fuel.
He went on to say that he even ‘gave him a little leeway for highway miles’ but that would still only bring it to around 105 miles per 2.4 gallons of gas.
“My dude was pretty quiet for a bit there,” he added.
Range anxiety could very soon be a thing of the past
Many modern EVs now offer 300 miles of range as a baseline.
But new advancements in EV technology are seeing those limits pushed further and further.
Carmakers are currently working to introduce solid-state batteries to their vehicles, which could offer around 620 miles of range between charges and make range anxiety a thing of the past.
Alongside that, EV charging stations have also been boosted, meaning topping up your EV’s battery is almost as quick as filling up the tank.
