Feast your eyes on the Baojun 4x4, China's Jimny killer

This tiny off-roader from Baojun is being designed to take on Suzuki’s cult classic, the Jimny.
The car is yet to be named, but Baojun has released a teaser aimed firmly at Suzuki.
In the video titled “Baojun does what Suzuki should have done” the popular Chinese brand gives us a glimpse of the mini 4×4.
And it appears to be one step ahead of Suzuki because the 4×4 will be electric.
In the video, we can see a boxy body with a straight hood and front.
Baojun’s also added a bunch of design elements to give it an unmistakable off-road appearance.
It sports off-road friendly bumpers, roof rails, and of course big off-road tires.
The teaser also gives us a glimpse of the headlights, which are made up of four oval-shaped LED lights.
Baojun, parent company of SAIC-GM-Wuling Automobile, also brings this design element to the taillights and the door handles of the 4×4.
It also shows grey alloy wheels with yellow brake calipers.
In terms of performance, the car is expected to run on two electric motors with a combined power output of about 110hp.
So, just like its Japanese competitor, it’s not going to win any speed records.

But that’s not expected to hinder sales.
When Baojun launched its KiWi EV at the 2021 Shanghai Motor Show in April last year, it received more than 3,000 reservations within a week.
And given the hype around the brand’s new mini 4×4, interest is likely to be similar.
The Jimny competitor is expected to be unveiled at the Guangzhou Auto Show this October before hitting the market in early 2023.
Meanwhile, Suzuki’s not resting on its laurels.
The Japanese-based brand is taking full advantage of the success of its Jimny, and coming out with a five-door version of the cult classic.
The five-door was spotted being tested in India this month ahead of its expected debut in January next year.
