This is the new Fiat TRIS, a new tiny three-wheel pick-up EV inspired by an old icon.
This new tiny three-wheel pick-up is designed to haul stuff around, as long as the ‘stuff’ in question is not too heavy.
But that’s beside the point, because hardcore car fans will recognize where the inspiration comes from.
There’s bad news, though.
The reason why Fiat built this truck
Fiat designed this new three-wheel pick-up EV as a vehicle that can be used to transport lightweight goods around.
Obviously it’s not exactly the same as a ‘normal’ truck, but it can still haul up to 540 kilograms (1,190 pounds), which is not bad at all.
The range isn’t great, just 55 miles (90 kilometers), but it’s more than adequate for its purpose.
At 3.17 meters, this vehicle is quite tiny, about the same size as the first Smart car.

Three-wheel vehicles are becoming popular again, but they’re mostly sold in markets like China and, with exceptions, aren’t really that common in other regions.
This leads us on to the bad news here, because this tiny vehicle is only available in the Middle East and Africa for now, but the company said it should soon become available in Europe as well.
Hopefully it’ll be available in North America as well at some point.

The inspiration behind this truck
Fiat probably used the iconic Apecar (pictured below), sometimes simply called ‘Ape’, as an inspiration for this vehicle.
The fact it has three wheels is telling, but it’s the vehicle’s design that gave it away.

The new Fiat TRIS looks precisely like a modern take on the Ape.
It has the same purpose as well.
The goal is to use this in the city, because the Apecar was street-legal but not highway legal, and the same goes for the Tris, which only has 12 horsepower.
But the idea is to use this as a substitute for a bigger truck that would be overkill when you only need to haul smaller things around.
The price hasn’t been revealed yet, but the Ape was very cheap, so hopefully the same will apply to the Fiat TRIS.
