When EVs first hit the car market, people had very little faith in the longevity of their batteries – but these five EVs have hit 125,000 miles on their original battery.
The five impressive cars have shown proof that when these vehicles are properly taken care of, they’ll last for far longer than they need to.
Recently, a Hyundai Ioniq 5 has hit the headlines for making 500,000KM on its original battery, saving its owner a lot of money on replacement batteries, but there are others that are even more surprising.
In the top five most reliable EV batteries list, you can find brands like Nissan, Tesla, and Chevrolet, with the batteries sometimes even outlasting the car itself.

Nissan Leaf
A Washington State-based Nissan Leaf EV owner named Steve Marsh made news headlines in 2016 due to crossing a milestone of over 150,000 miles in his electric car.
Three years before that, he was the first American owner of the Nissan Leaf to drive it past 100,000 miles. He still drives it, but has since bought a new Nissan Leaf, determined to show that lightning does strike twice.

BMW i3
The only BMW EV on this list was a cause for celebration for the automaker in 2019.
That year, the brand announced that a South African EV driver of one of its BMW i3s had reached 200,000KM (124,274 miles) in just three years of ownership.
In 2022, the same car was still going strong and had amassed 187,000 miles, impressive for an EV not particularly heralded for its battery capacity.

Chevrolet Bolt
A video on YouTube went viral last year with a Chevy Bolt owner showing off his EV’s longevity. The car had managed an impressive 138,000 miles on its original battery.
The YouTuber is still driving his car with its second battery and has happily reached 300,000 miles.

Tesla EVs: Model S 70D and Model 3
A YouTube video went viral about three years ago showing a Tesla Model S 70D with a whopping 400,000 miles on its original battery.
The video evidence is irrefutable and it’s very impressive for the EV specialist automaker.
There’s no video evidence, but a Model 3 owner took to X to post about their Tesla and its long life, having clocked up half a million kilometres on the original battery.
“Original battery. Original brakes. Half a million and still have,” the caption read.

So, there you have it: the five surprising EVs that are consistently impressing with their long original battery lifespan.
Now’s your chance to treat your EV with a bit of TLC to make sure you’ll be reaching the lofty heights of the Nissan Leaf.
