Ford is kicking off its new affordable EV ‘family’ with a brand-new small electric pickup truck.
The Blue Oval has already launched the full-size F-150 Lightning pickup. Now it’s set to launch a new line of EVs with a pickup truck part of it.
CEO Jim Farley was impressed by some of China’s cheap EVs, such as the Xiaomi SU7, and the company is ready to fight off the competition.
With the massive Tesla Cybertruck selling poorly, this is a chance for the company to capitalize on something smaller and cheaper for its customers.

What form will the new affordable pickup truck take?
At the moment, details on this new affordable family of EVs from the Blue Oval are scarce.
But a small, all-electric pickup truck is very much in the planning stages.
Should it happen, it’s expected to be placed between the Maverick and Ranger when it comes to its size.
The pickup will have new lithium-ion-phosphate battery packs, as will other EVs in this new range.

While they have less range than regular lithium-ion batteries, lithium-ion-phosphate batteries are cheaper to make.
Plus, they are safer and less likely to catch fire either in a crash or during a short circuit.
Ford is set to offer various powertrain options as well.
The rest of the affordable EV family
More vehicles are set to form a part of the cheaper EV family as well.
A range of body styles will be made, and a small SUV is one of the other vehicles set to join the range.
The company has a top-secret Skunkworks team that’s spent the last 18 months looking to cut prices in half.
A new high-end SUV is coming that will cost $60,000, but the manufacturer wants to slash that price to around $30,000 for its next SUV.

The ultimate aim is to be able to compete with Chinese manufacturers.
China has begun producing excellent EVs that cost a fraction of the price of electric cars in the West.
Cars such as the Xiaomi SU7 have really impressed rivals and are a big worry for American and European manufacturers.
Should the brand crack the affordable market, it would begin to reel China in and show the country it won’t have it all its own way.
