Oprah Winfrey is known for a lot of things, and giving away cars is one of them.
The TV host cemented herself as an internet meme when she famously gave members of her studio audience a Pontiac G6.
And that wasn’t even the only time she did such a thing – she repeated the stunt a few years later with Volkswagen Beetles.
One of the women sitting in the audience has revealed what Oprah said once the cameras stopped rolling on the iconic episode.

Oprah Winfrey has form for giving away free cars
You certainly don’t need us to tell you this, but Oprah Winfrey is a very wealthy and successful woman.
And at the height of her influence, she made headlines with her talk show.
Usually, she’d have celebrities on to reveal deeply intimate details of their private lives.

But sometimes, she’d be giving away free stuff.
You’ve no doubt seen the GIF of her yelling ‘You get a car’ repeatedly.
That came from a 2004 episode in which the show gave out 276 Pontiac G6s to a hysterical audience – and they were subsequently landed with huge fees.

Lightning usually doesn’t strike twice, but this is Oprah we’re talking about here.
Fast forward six years, and Oprah was getting ready to finish her show after 25 iconic years.
And what better way to finish off a quarter of a century in television than with another car giveaway?
This time around, it was Volkswagen Beetles.
But what Oprah said when the cameras stopped rolling is just as impactful as her generous gesture.
What the talk show host said once the cameras stopped rolling
Candi Davis was one of the lucky audience members who got a Beetle back in 2010, and she took to TikTok to share her memories of the day.
“It was a crazy, crazy day,” she recalled.

But it wasn’t just a new car Oprah gave to her audience – she also gave some words of wisdom.
“She kicked off her gold high-heeled shoes, sat down on the edge of the stage, and talked to all of us,” Candi recalled.
“She said, ‘I know you don’t feel like you deserve any of this stuff, and you don’t’.
“But you are worthy of it, and I want you to remember that.”
When people in the comments got confused about what Oprah meant by this, Candi elaborated in a follow-up video.
“There were a lot of people saying, ‘I should sell my car and give the money to my kids’,” Candi recalled.
“Oprah overheard some of that talk and said, ‘Let me stop you right there. You don’t deserve this, and if you feel like you don’t deserve this, that’s valid.

“But I want you to feel worthy of it. I want you to accept it. I want you to leave here with the car and not feel bad. Release any guilt you feel about being gifted this car.'”
She insisted that the media personality meant in a ‘sweet way’, not as a ‘backhanded compliment’ as some commenters had previously believed.
And that Volkswagen Beetle? Davis still drives it to this day.
Oprah is certainly in no need of any car giveaways, as her impressive collection demonstrates.
However, Cynthia Erivo did get to return the favor when hosting the Tony Awards earlier this year.
