General Motors (GM) engineers managed to get 1,059 miles out of the Chevy Silverado EV on just a single charge for the pickup truck.

Electric pickup trucks are becoming more common, with Ford, Chevrolet, Rivian, and Tesla all producing one.

The push for as much range as possible is still ongoing, too, with all companies wanting their trucks to go as far as possible on a single charge.

Chevrolet recently managed to get over 1,000 miles out of the Silverado. It did so on just one single charging cycle, compared to its EPA rating of 493 miles.

How GM engineers got 1,000 miles out of the Chevy Silverado EV

Official EPA figures quote the range of the Chevrolet Silverado EV at 439 miles.

So, how on earth did GM’s engineers get the EV to do over 1,000 miles?

GM itself has said that 40 engineers spent months putting a plan together for the endeavor.

That then led to a week of back-to-back driver stints to make the feat happen.

To get the truck to achieve this range, the engineers really had to work their magic.

This included inflating the tires to their maximum safe pressures, moving the windshield wipers to their lowest position, and taking things out, such as the spare wheel.

For most of its time on the road, the truck only had the driver in it, with one passenger on occasion.

To eliminate cold battery performance issues, the test was conducted in the summer.

Careful driving eked out the pickup truck’s range

Suburban Detroit was the location for most of the testing, which kept speeds down to no more than 25mph.

Primary locations for the test were Milford and the park roads on Detroit’s Belle Isle, the former home of an IndyCar race.

One challenge was the roads to Belle Isle, which had faster speeds than GM was targeting.

Driving at off-peak times certainly helped too, so the Silverado could avoid the worst of the traffic.

In the end, the truck was able to clock up an incredible 1,059 miles on its single charge.

Currently, Lucid has the Guinness World Record for miles traveled on a single charge at 749 miles with the Air GT.

This wasn’t an official record attempt by GM, but it shows they might go for it in the future.
