Great Wall Motors (GWM) may not be the first brand you think of when you’re in the market for a supercar, but the company has bold plans.

The Chinese automaker has revealed that development for a supercar project began five years ago.

Although its focus is currently on SUVs and pickup trucks, the brand is very confident in its ability to break into the supercar market.

In fact, GWM thinks that its new supercar prototype may even be superior to cars made by Ferrari.

The GWM CEO wanted a car that excites the public

GWM’s CTO Wu Huixiao revealed the brand’s new supercar plans in an interview with a car blogger on Weibo.

During the light-hearted interview, Wu mentioned that the company has been working on the supercar project for the last five years.

The project began when its CEO expressed interest in developing a car that would give drivers an adrenaline rush.

When asked whether the mysterious car will be a mere sports car, or an actual supercar, Wu confidently replied that it will be positioned as a supercar.

Wu also stated that despite the years of development, the company has yet to release the supercar as it is still working on keeping costs low.

So, how low is low?

When asked whether the car will cost upwards of 1 million Yuan ($137,526), she declined to comment, coyly stating that she’s not in charge of pricing.

Better than the Ferrari SF90

Recently, GWM’s Chairman Wei Jianjun was spotted driving a Ferrari SF90 to the airport.

This fueled speculation that the company is working on its own supercar.

Referring to this incident, Wu was asked how GWM’s new supercar will compare to the Ferrari SF90 in question.

“What we do is definitely better than theirs,” she replied confidently.

However, she did take a step back immediately after the bold statement, adding that the company is still learning from its peers.

When asked whether GWM would test their new supercar at the Nürburgring track in Germany, she avoided replying in definitive terms.

However, she revealed that the company has invited experts from Europe who have experience working on the very same track.

Wu also revealed that having a carbon fiber cabin for the car is considered a ‘must’, but acknowledged that the company has faced difficulties while undergoing testing.

She also said that this is a common issue in China, even proclaiming that ‘no company in China can do a good job with carbon fiber.’

We can’t comment on that, but we hope to learn more about this challenger on the supercar scene in due course.
