The Honda 0 Series EVs have just been revealed at CES 2025 and the automaker has shared the reason behind the radical design change compared to its traditional models.

Both futuristic prototype concept cars also look like they are straight out of a sci-fi video game.

This is a huge departure from Honda’s traditional design language like in the current Civic and CR-V.

Fortunately, Honda’s design head has also explained why the new EV cars feature such a radical design.

Honda 0 Series EVs

In the past, Honda has reserved most of its radically designed cars for Japan, never bringing them to the US.

However, according to Toshinobu Minami, Managing Director and COO of the Design Center at Honda R&D, now is the right time.

“[Honda models in] the U.S. market have probably not been too radical. But in the past, in Japan, we’ve made some radical designs. They’ve also failed a lot, but this time, we’ve decided on a solid approach — Thin, Light and Wise — especially the exterior,” said Minami.

The Honda 0 Series EVs will also feature self-driving technology (ADAS).

“We wanted to thoroughly express the thinness, and also include the ADAS and other functions.

“The exterior is not just to make you say ‘wow!’ Aerodynamics [and] the ADAS are simply expressed in a form that has been enhanced to the ultimate level, the latest technologies.” he added.

Futuristic design

Looking at the cars, people are certainly going to say ‘Wow.’

Honda has also developed its own operating system, called ‘ASIMO OS’ that will handle the car’s self-driving system.

It’s suffice to say that Honda is upping their EV game.

“I’d like to create a new brand that preserves the desire to own a car, that makes people happy every time they have one,” said Minami.

“This brand 0 is going to be an upgraded version of Honda in the U.S.

“We wanted to make a design that can resonate with the next generation of customers, Generation Z, and other such customers,” he added.
