Hyundai is launching a mid-sized truck for the US market that could be a serious rival for the Toyota Tacoma.

The news was confirmed during the Hyundai CEO Investor Day by CEO José Muñoz.

Muñoz said the new truck will be here ‘before 2030’.

The company has also suggested there could be an SUV variant on the cards.

Hyundai is launching a new mid-sized truck

Mid–sized trucks like the Ford Bronco and Toyota Tacoma are consistent sellers for their respective marques, and now it seems Hyundai is keen to get a piece of the action.

The Japanese carmaker has shared details of its future and has announced that a new truck using a body-on-frame platform is on the way.

CEO Muñoz has also said that the upcoming vehicle might get an SUV variant.

It’s been suggested that the truck might use the 329-horsepower hybrid powertrain from the Palisade Hybrid.

It will be the first mid-sized pickup truck from Hyuandai, and follows on from the compact Santa Cruz pickup.

“Since launching the Santa Cruz in 2021, the company has gained valuable experience and brand presence, positioning it strongly to broaden its reach in the heart of the US market,” the carmaker said.

As yet, no further details have been released about the truck, but we do know it’ll be here ‘before 2030’.

The carmaker is working on extended-range electric vehicles

Alongside a new mid-sized pickup truck, Hyundai also announced its plans to introduce a range of extended-range electric vehicles.

The cars will mostly be powered by electricity but will come with a combustion engine that works like a generator to give the vehicle more juice.

Hyundai says the vehicles could offer more than 600 miles of range, and will make range anxiety a thing of the past.

“Unlike conventional EREVs, Hyundai’s approach utilizes in-house high-performance batteries, achieving full EV power performance with less than half the battery capacity, improving accessibility while maintaining exceptional range and performance, and eliminating range anxiety,” the company said in a statement.

Hyundai plans to launch the EREVs in 2027, meaning that it could potentially be a powertrain option for the upcoming, as yet unnamed truck.
