Hyundai has revealed an electric camper van concept.
And it’s aimed squarely at people who don’t want to stay plugged in.
It’s an EV designed to live off-grid, with solar power doing some of the heavy lifting.
And for once, it feels like more than a design exercise.

Hyundai’s electric camper is designed to power itself off-grid
The concept is called the Hyundai Staria Electric Camper, and it made its public debut at the CMT trade fair in Stuttgart, Germany.
Underneath, it’s built on the same foundations as the Staria Electric MPV, with an estimated WLTP range of up to 250 miles (400km).
It also uses Hyundai’s 800-volt electrical architecture – the same setup found in the Hyundai IONIQ 5 and Hyundai IONIQ 6 – which allows fast charging from 10 percent to 80 percent in around 20 minutes.
For camper duty, Hyundai has gone further than just adding cabinets.

The suspension has been retuned for comfort, and extra sound-deadening has been added to keep things nearly silent on long drives.
The idea is calm travel, not white-knuckle range anxiety.
But the headline feature sits on top.
A pop-up roof expands the interior living space at the push of a button, and integrated into that roof is a 520W solar panel system.
Hyundai says with around five hours of sunlight per day, the panels can generate up to 2.6kWh of electricity.
That energy can be stored and used to run onboard systems or add small boosts to range during extended off-grid stays.

It’s not about infinite driving – it’s about staying comfortable without hunting for a plug.
Inside, this feels like a proper camper.
There’s a kitchen area, a 36-liter refrigerator, a portable showerhead, and a dedicated climate-control system.
And the rear windows use smart glass, letting occupants adjust transparency and UV filtering through a touchscreen depending on how much light or privacy they want.

Why Hyundai thinks Europe is ready for an electric camper like this
This concept makes a lot more sense in Europe than anywhere else.
Camper culture is huge, campsites are widely equipped with electrical hookups, and EV adoption is already strong.
Hyundai is clearly positioning the Staria Electric Camper as a premium lifestyle vehicle rather than a niche experiment.
For now, it’s still labeled ‘under evaluation.’

Hyundai is collecting feedback at the show and through an online survey before deciding whether it will go into production.
As for the US, expectations should stay low.
The gas-powered Staria isn’t sold there, and this concept has been developed specifically with European buyers in mind.
Still, even as a concept, the Staria Electric Camper shows how EVs are starting to move beyond commuting and into how people actually want to travel.
Quietly, comfortably, and a little further off the grid.
