This man wanted to see whether a Japanese bullet train could cross Japan quicker than a domestic flight.
YouTuber Noel Philips travelled the 300-mile journey from Tokyo to Osaka in a bullet train before flying back.
Japan’s trains are famous for their speed, but could they outpace a plane?
The results were eye-opening.

This man wanted to pit a Japanese bullet train against a plane to see which was faster
In his content, Noel Philips is constantly on planes, whether it be on the oldest Boeing 737 or the world’s longest Boeing 747 flight.
He’s constantly on a flight – in fact, he once flew every day for a week.
So suffice to say, he’s an aviation fan.
But in this video, he wanted to see how a plane could fare when pitted against a Japanese bullet train, specifically the Shinkansen line heading to Osaka from Tokyo.

This network has been running since 1964, connecting Japan’s cities with a 200mph speed and a flawless safety record.
In addition to its speed, it’s extremely punctual, with an average delay time of only 1.6 minutes – compare that with 2.3 minutes in the UK.
But the question that Philips wanted to answer was this: could he complete this Tokyo-Osaka journey quicker on a train or by plane?
There was only one way to find out.
The train that Philips rode on was the Nozomi service, traveling at roughly 175mph and making stops along the way at Nagoya and Kyoto.

With amenities like heated seats and views of Mount Fuji, there was a lot to enjoy about this trip.
All in all, he made it to Osaka in four hours, five minutes, and seven seconds exactly.
Bear in mind, he was counting station transfers and subway connections to the hotel in his calculations, too.
Now it was time for the plane to show what it was capable of.

How did the plane fare, making it from Osaka back to Tokyo?
Much like he had done with his train trip, Philips was measuring the journey time as ‘door to door’.
As you might expect, airport security at Osaka Itami Airport bulked out the journey.
Then the plane itself was delayed due to aircraft maintenance.
But the flight itself only took around 40 minutes.

In total, the plane journey was measured out to be five hours, eight minutes, and 23 seconds.
Despite higher speeds in the air, Philips concluded that the train won on total travel time.
“If you want to travel in comfort and style, and amazing sights, take the train,” Philips concluded.
“If you want to be flying across the country at a high speed, and get there an hour faster…also take the train.”
That must sting for an aviation fan to say.
