Jay Leno was spotted driving the world’s fastest tank down California roads as he shouted out to locals.

Even by the eccentric standards of Hollywood celebrities, this act was attention-grabbing.

The 75-year-old comedian took a ride in his 1972 Alvis Scorpion, popping his head up through the hatch.

This tank wasn’t a movie prop, it was the real deal – all 17,600lbs of it.

Jay Leno rolled down the road in the world’s fastest tank

Picture it: a car-loving American comedian and a British-built Alvis Scorpion.

It’s not the most obvious match-up ever, but it works somehow.

The Alvis Scorpion is the world’s fastest production tank, capable of going between 50 and 55mph.

That might not sound like a speed demon, but this juggernaut is carrying around 17,600lbs, to be fair.

Beneath the aluminum exterior is a 4.2-litre twin-cam Jaguar XK engine.

And when you have such a beast of a machine at your disposal, you want to do something big with it, right?

As the saying goes, ‘Go big or go home’.

We have to say, driving a tank through the streets of LA certainly qualifies as going big.

Admittedly, not everybody was rubber-necking at the sight of this behemoth, as two women barely looked twice as it went past.

“It’s not a chick magnet, it’s aluminum,” Leno joked.

In order to prevent it from damaging the roads, Leno had added some rubber blocks onto the tank’s treads.

This isn’t the comedian’s first rodeo with an interesting vehicle

If you were to ask the average American what they knew about Jay Leno, they’d tell you that he used to host The Tonight Show.

But after a career spent sitting behind a desk, Leno has stretched his wings to become a fully fledged car enthusiast.

His collection is the most searched among celebrities, beating out Bill Gates and Cristiano Ronaldo.

And through his show, Jay Leno’s Garage, he’s gotten the chance to look at some seriously cool cars.

There was this super-rare Mercedes Gullwing, as well as this Ferrari Daytona SP3, and an old Ford Model T.

But even by the standards of this eclectic line-up, the world’s fastest tank stands out.
