This Kansas man took a $2 million Mercedes from the 1950s on a 1,000-mile road trip and ended up in a seriously unfortunate situation.

Tyler Hoover, the host of YouTube channel Hoovies Garage, is no stranger to a risky car venture.

But even for the host of the ‘dumbest automotive channel in all of YouTube’, this was a undesirable predicament to be stuck in.

You could say this road trip was a comedy of errors, but would anyone be laughing by the end of the journey?

Things got out of hand fast when this YouTuber took a $2 million Mercedes on a 1,000 mile road trip

The Mercedes 300SL Gullwing had been disassembled and rebuilt at the Mercedes Classic Center.

Hoover was driving the car in a convoy of 30 other 300SLs on a 1,000 mile journey from the Utah Rockies to Colorado Canyons.

For the YouTuber, this was a dream come true and he had to pinch himself.

Driving along some of the world’s most beautiful roads in his dream car? Who could ask for more?

But this wasn’t going to be an easy road for the Gullwing or any of its siblings.

Early on, a major issue was discovered – brake fluid was being sucked into the engine via a vacuum line tied to the brake booster.

The team rebuilt the brake booster before departure.

Around 300 miles in, the car suffered a power loss and began behaving as if it was down a cylinder or had a clogged fuel filter.

“I can still drive…but it’ll probably get worse,” Hoover fretted.

On top of that, the shifter mechanism failed, as it began ‘slipping in’.

They had to make a pitstop to get the shifter repaired.

Another problem reared its head on day two when an oil cooler leak was discovered.

Oil was sprayed across the front of the car, so an investigation was undertaken to find a cause.

It was apparently down to the wrong seal rings being used – they should have been aluminum, but fiber had been used instead.

As if that wasn’t enough, a crack was later found in the solder joint between the top oil tank and the bleeder hose.

A custom hose was installed to remedy this issue.

For the final stretch of the journey, the car ran relatively smoothly.

“It probably shouldn’t go back with me to Kansas just yet,” Hoover said at the journey’s conclusion.

“The oil cooler needs to be fixed. The coolant lines, I feel like if you look at them the wrong way, they’d blow up.”

So it’s fair to share there’s still some things to be worked out.

The many car misadventures of Hoovies Garage

Over the years, Hoovies Garage has seen a lot of cars, some with more faults than others.

There was the $9,999 Rolls-Royce, which had one issue after another, and the $300,000 Mercedes SLR McLaren.

And lest we forget the time he traded in a James Bond pinball machine for a BMW 535i.

All in all, his 25-strong garage is what he calls the ‘dumbest car collection’ – and those are his words, not ours.
