Two kids playing outside their Los Angeles home found a buried Ferrari Dino 246 GTS in their backyard.

The kids were pretending to dig up buried treasure when they ended up doing exactly that.

It was some innocent fun that turned into an incredibly exciting discovery for the kids.

Unfortunately, the story behind the buried Ferrari wasn’t as innocent.

Discovering a Ferrari in an LA backyard

The supercar was discovered in Los Angeles in the late 1970s, believed to have been buried for about four years.

Apparently, the windows were open but the car had been covered in plastic tarps and carpets, and towels had been stuck into the exhaust to protect it from dirt and soil.

Years later, it emerged that the owner had buried the car in a reported attempt to commit insurance fraud.

After it was uncovered, real estate businessman Brad Howard bought the car from the insurance firm that had taken ownership of it.

He only paid $9,000 for it ($44,000 in today’s money when adjusted for inflation), had it restored, and, as it turns out, still owns it to this day.

Not a bad deal considering the Ferrari Dino 246 GTS has a market value of around $500,000 today.

Not the first buried Ferrari

This Ferrari Dino wasn’t the first buried Ferrari in history, nor was it the last.

Not long ago, somebody found another buried Ferrari in a barn in Japan.

Rather worryingly, insurance fraud appears to be a recurring theme here.

A while back, YouTuber Tavarish found a Range Rover buried underground, again as part of a reported insurance fraud attempt, and he is now restoring it.

The same thing happened to a couple who found an abandoned car buried in the snow 6,000 feet up in the mountains of California.

And it also happened to another couple, this time in Ohio.

The couple bought a sizable property and, upon inspection, they discovered a car that had been buried in a hayfield.
