Now the richest man on the planet and worth over $300 billion, Larry Ellison once rented an entire Concorde just to flex a new Oracle database and prove that it was faster than any other rival product.

Talk about showing off.

Even when Oracle was in its adolescent stage, CEO Larry Ellison knew he was on to a winner that would soon make him known around the globe.

But to showcase his company’s superiority, even back in the 1980s, Larry Ellison went above and beyond.

Oracle CEO Larry Elisson bet big with his celebratory joyrides

Nowadays, you might well know Larry Ellison as the man who took over from Elon Musk as the wealthiest individual on earth.

The owner of the tech company Oracle has been rising through the ranks, overtaking household names like Jeff Bezos of Amazon and Mark Zuckerberg of Meta.

He’s not always one to splash the cash, though, even selling some of his favorite supercars.

Whereas Bezos, for example, spends his days sailing through Europe on one of the most expensive yachts in the world.

However, when it comes to flexing his company, Oracle’s, successes, there’s no expense shared.

Back in 1988, Ellison flew esteemed press and public relations personnel on a Concorde trip filled with the finest treats and condiments available, all to show off Oracle Six.

The private flight saw the team embark on the supersonic jet and showcase how the new sixth-gen database would work.

Heading out of JFK airport, the company launched the product mid-air and clinked champagne glasses to its resounding success.

“We launched Oracle version 6 on the Concorde,” Oracle executive Mike Jacobs said.

“We took analysts and press for a flight to nowhere for dinner – and it was fast.”

What is a private Concorde flight like?

Only a handful of people ever enjoyed the spectacle of a Concorde flight, and those like Jeremy Clarkson had been left begging for more ever since.

But even fewer people were able to fly privately, and that experience was something else entirely.

The journey from JFK would see the iconic jet burst through the sound barrier to near Mach 2 speeds while the guests, as still and comfy as you could ever be at these unparalleled speeds, tucked into an indulgent dinner.

Vintage champagne – often Dom Pérignon – French courses like lobster, duck, or tournedos of beef would be served as the main course, and a delicate tray of fancies would round off the menu.

For Larry Ellison, though, the journey was all about flexing the product over his wealth, as who can ever say that they launched a product while slicing through the air at 1,354mph?
