Giant Legend of the Seas cruise ship squeezes through bridge with only 30cm of clearance as it travels to collect its first ever passengers

The world’s largest cruise ship, Legend of the Seas, has completed one of the most nerve-wracking parts of its journey, going under a bridge with only 30cm spare, before welcoming passengers for the very first time.

Legend of the Seas, Royal Caribbean’s brand-new Icon Class vessel, managed to squeeze beneath a bridge in a moment that had everyone holding their breath.

For a ship that stretches almost 365 meters (1,198ft) long and can carry thousands of passengers, that’s a frightening thought.

And yet, the giant vessel glided through without a problem as it continued its voyage toward Spain ahead of its maiden voyage – and the sight is truly something to behold.

Legend of the Seas squeezes through bridge with only 30cm to spare

Fresh footage shows Legend of the Seas, which is the superyacht of cruise ships, passing beneath Denmark’s famous Great Belt Bridge.

It’s a crossing that has become something of a rite of passage for Royal Caribbean’s biggest ships.

The moment looked incredibly tight, and that’s because it was.

According to Royal Caribbean, the vessel passed beneath the bridge with just 30cm of clearance between the top of the ship and the structure above.

To make it happen, engineers had to use a combination of retractable funnels, additional ballast water and carefully calculated speed adjustments.

Any miscalculation would have resulted in hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of damage.

Under normal conditions, the ship stands around 70 meters above sea level, while the bridge’s navigational clearance is roughly 65 meters.

By temporarily lowering the ship deeper into the water and retracting parts of its structure, the crew created just enough room for the giant boat to sneak underneath the bridge.

The result was a crossing that looked almost too close for comfort, with some camera angles making it seem as though the bridge was practically touching the ship.

The world’s largest cruise ship is nearly ready for its first guests

The dramatic bridge transit marks another major milestone for Legend of the Seas, which was officially delivered by the Meyer Turku shipyard earlier this month.

The ship is currently heading toward Cádiz, Spain, where final work will be completed before its first passenger cruises begin.

Legend of the Seas is the third vessel in Royal Caribbean’s hugely successful Icon Class lineup and is officially the largest cruise ship in the world, edging out its sister ships by a tiny margin.

When it enters service in July, the floating city will take passengers around the Mediterranean before later relocating to Florida for Caribbean sailings.

The bridge crossing turned into an internet sensation after Royal Caribbean shared a video of the impressive feat, in which you could hear those on deck celebrating.

After all, watching the world’s largest cruise ship thread a gap with only 30cm to spare is enough to make anyone hold their breath.
