Lucid has launched its first-ever Nuro-Uber robotaxi, with the first Gravity SUV EV rolling off the production line before making its way to California.
Lucid, Uber, and Nuro partnered up in July 2025 in a huge robotaxi deal as an attempt to deploy around 20,000 vehicles across the United States.
The EV manufacturer has now delivered the first Gravity SUV to Nuro, for it to be retrofitted with the required robotic and taxi gear.
The scheme could be a big rival to Tesla and its Robotaxi plans, as it too looks to launch a robotic taxi service.

Lucid is using the Gravity SUV for the robotaxi
Lucid has chosen the Gravity SUV to be the vehicle used in its robotaxi service.
Following construction at Lucid’s Arizona factory, the EV was transported to Nuro’s headquarters in California.
Sensors and all the other autonomous driving equipment were then installed in the car.
Eventually, rather than retrofitting the cars, they will have the equipment added on the Lucid assembly line.

The current progress has seen the car be integrated with the Nuro Driver software.
Following this, the EV will undergo testing and validation to ensure it complies with road rules.
If all goes to plan, the companies will roll the first road-ready example onto Uber’s ride-hailing network in 2026.
What’s next for the Nuro-Uber robotaxi?
Should the deployment go well, then more and more robotaxis will be rolled out over the coming few years.
The aim is to deliver 20,000 of them across the United States over the next six years.
However, Nuro expects more to follow, with 20,000 the minimum figure that the companies want to achieve.
It would be a massive achievement.
Ride-hailing companies are struggling to deliver large numbers of self-driving cars.

Waymo, for example, has less than 2,000 vehicles on its books.
Tesla is in a worse position at the moment, with a small number of robotaxis currently in public use.
Should the three companies usurp Tesla, it would be a massive win for all three companies.
Next year should give us a good indication as to how successful the Nuro-Uber robotaxi scheme will be.
