This man bought a BMW i3 REx for $6,000, getting it cheaper because of a ‘bad engine’ – but it turned out to be absolutely fine.
Randy, the host of YouTube channel Auto Auction Rebuilds, scored the 2017 REx at an auction.
The previous owner had put its issues down to internal engine noise.
But once Randy got a closer look at the vehicle, he realized that things weren’t quite what they seemed.

Buying a BMW i3 REx for $6k at auction
When buying a car at auction, you can sometimes get mixed results.
For some, there’s great results, like this man who snagged a Ferrari after 34 long years of waiting.
Or this Florida man who bought a junk Corvette and discovered it was basically brand new.

Then there are less successful cases, like this man who thought he’d bagged a bargain with a $6k Tesla Model S, but ended up spending thousands more in repairs.
All that is to say, you can never be too sure about what you’re going to get.
Fortunately, in Randy’s case, he was in the former camp.
Which is unexpected as he’d been told in advance that his BMW had engine problems.

At the top of his video, Randy had high praise for the car.
“This is the range extended edition, which means you’re not just limited to electricity.
“Which means you can actually put gasoline in this car and the generator will keep the battery charged,” he explained.

He didn’t stop there, though.
“In my opinion, this makes this $6,000 BMW way better than any Tesla on the road or on the market today.”
A big compliment indeed, but did it mean a whole lot if the engine is faulty?
Well, the engine appeared to be fine, as Randy himself found out when he took it out for a drive and racked up more than 20 miles with no issue.
What did he think of the car overall?
Randy labeled the car as the ‘best of both worlds’ and recommended it to anybody who was on the fence about switching to an EV.
“When you run out electricity with a Tesla, you’re left on the side of the road.

“With this, you turn on the generator and you will continue driving on,” he said.
And to think that he got this great car for so cheap, all because it was misidentified as having a bad engine.
When first released in 2017, these cars were going for a price of $43k.
To get a car like that for a measly $6,000 is a bargain in anyone’s book.
